In May of 2002, the Province of Manitoba conceived an idea of constructing a memorial at the International Peace Garden to those who lost their lives in the events of September 11, 2001. Soon after, the Peace Garden learned that they would receive ten pieces of steel from the wreckage of the World Trade Center.
